As we humans can get out of shape from a lack of activity, so can the mechanical devices around our home. One of the most important mechanical devices that we need to exercise on a regular basis is our sump pump.

Many homes, but not all, have sump pits in the basement floor. Ground water from under the basement foundation collects in the pit and your sump pump drains the water when it reaches a certain level. Your sump pump helps keep your basement dry when it is working properly. Your basement can suffer expensive moisture damage when it does not.

The sump switch needs to be exercised on a regular basis. Some homes have a good deal of water under the foundation,  and the sump pump works on regular basis. All you have to do is  remind your self to listen for it to turn on and off, perhaps keep a checklist. In many homes, the sump only works after a heavy rain. It is very important to exercise these sump pumps during dry spells so that the switch works when it is needed most. Inactivity can lead to a stuck switch.

You can test or exercise your sump pump by adding water to the pit until the switch turns on. Many sump pumps have float switches that can be lifted to exercise the switch. You should disconnect the power if you are going to use your hand to exercise the  switch.  Use a wooden or plastic stick with a hook to lift the switches when the power is on. The sump should  be connected to a grounded GFCI-protected outlet,

All sump pits must have secured covers so that young children cannot fall into them.
