After months of enjoying family trips and camping, RV owners must prepare their vehicles for winter storage. There are several steps to ensure the engine, interior, and exterior remain in good condition for the next year. Here are the most important RV maintenance tasks to complete at the end of the summer.

Perform These 5 Steps Before Putting Your RV in Storage

1. Wash the Interior and Exterior Thoroughly

Any small growths of mold on or inside the RV will bloom into a huge colony over the winter. To prevent this, make sure you remove all food and other perishables, and give the vehicle a thorough wash and detailing.

2. Prevent Moisture Buildup

storageNext, get the RV thoroughly dry to prevent mildew and take measures to prevent moisture accumulation over the winter. Silica gel and dehumidifiers are two common ways to keep your motor home dry. If storing outdoors, cover the RV with a tarp made of breathable material so it will keep out the worst of the weather without trapping moisture underneath.

3. Remove Propane Tanks

Propane is highly combustible, so remove the tanks before decommissioning your RV, especially in an enclosed storage area. Most hardware stores sell caps to block dirt and insects from entering the propane lines. Store the tanks in a separate, well-ventilated location where vapors can escape if there’s a leak.

4. Place Pest Deterrents

Keep insects, mice, and other pests from invading by blocking entry points with brass or aluminum wool. Place traps and poisons around and inside the vehicle.

5. Use a Fuel Stabilizer

Now that you’ve safeguarded the body of the vehicle, it’s time to protect the engine. Fuel stabilizer removes moisture from the system to prevent rust and corrosion. Before storing for the winter, fill the RV’s tanks with fuel and add the fuel stabilizer, then idle the engine for several minutes, long enough to run the additive through.
