When it comes to protecting your home from the elements, nothing helps more than your roof. However, even when properly maintained, extreme storms and weather can take a toll on this structure, leading to extensive storm damage. If you’re not used to identifying the signs of damage, deciding if it’s time to call a roofing contractor for repairs can be a real challenge. Here are a few of the most common signs of weather-related roof damage to look for.

4 Signs of Storm Damage to Your Roof

1. Leaks in the Attic

When roofing materials are compromised, it’s not uncommon for water to seep into the attic during extreme weather. When a damaged roof is left in place, the water slowly collects and soaks into the materials just above your attic space. Often, homeowners will notice leaks in their attic ceiling along the roofline. Look for dark brown stains on any sheetrock in the attic, and be mindful of the condition of the rafters. If any look damp or you smell mold and mildew, you likely have an attic leak.

2. Missing Shingles

High winds have a way of lifting shingles off the roof. This leaves the subroofing exposed to water and moisture, making leaks more common and numerous. After a severe storm, walk the perimeter of your home and look for missing shingles on the roof and on the ground. If you notice any, contact a roofing contractor to schedule a repair appointment.

3. Granule Buildup in Gutters

Storm DamageAsphalt shingles have a layer of protective granules that help absorb the impact of debris, hail, and rain. Over time, those granules will slowly flake off and collect in the gutters where they’re typically washed away by the rain. However, if the shingles are severely damaged, the number of granules collecting in the gutters will be high. When you have your gutters cleaned, ask the contractor what they found in the gutters. If they see a lot of asphalt granules, schedule a roofing inspection immediately.

4. Dented Siding & Shingles

Even minor hail storms can lead to extreme storm damage for most homes. After every hail storm, inspect the exterior siding as well as the shingles for signs of damage. If you notice any pitting in the material or see cracks in the shingles, schedule a repair appointment immediately. The sooner it’s fixed, the less severe the risk of leaks and water damage will be.
