A perfect workout isn’t measured by how much weight you can lift or how many laps you can run. Instead, it is one that meets your needs, goals, and abilities—and Pilates is one of the best ways to transform your body and mind on an individualized level. Here’s a brief look at the history of this impactful physical fitness system.

What Is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises that emphasizes the quality of movement rather than the number of repetitions. The workout system employs smooth movements, proper breathing, and overall conditioning to develop a strong, balanced, flexible body. It was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the early 20th century.

How Was Pilates Created?

Pilates was born in Monchengladbach, Germany in 1883. As a child, Joseph Hubertus Pilates battled ailments, like asthma and rickets. Perhaps due to these afflictions, he dedicated his life to the study of exercise and fitness. In his youth, Pilates was a gymnast, boxer, martial arts practitioner, and bodybuilder.

pilatesIn 1912, he moved to England, where he earned a living as a professional boxer, circus performer, and self-defense instructor—until he was interned with other German nationals at the start of World War I. During this time, he honed his physical fitness program by working with his other internees. Much of the equipment he used during this time is still in use today, albeit in more modern iterations. For example, the Cadillac is based on the hospital bed equipment Pilates developed while he served as a hospital orderly on the Isle of Man.

After his release, Pilates emigrated to the United States with his wife, Clara Zeuner. In 1926, the couple opened a body conditioning gym in New York. It became popular among the New York dance community, partially due to its shared space with the New York City Ballet. Over time, his students opened their own studios, and the physical fitness system truly entered the mainstream when Hollywood elite discovered Pilates in the 1970s.

Since then, Pilates has continued to grow. As a powerful workout, rejuvenating mind-body experience, and individualized approach to wellness, this exercise system is beneficial for anyone from Olympic athletes to beginners.
