When homes are built on slopes, they need retaining walls to level out the land and create safe, usable spaces. Because there are so many material options for retaining walls, it isn’t always easy to know what would work best for your yard. Here is a little more information about three types of retaining walls, along with their advantages and drawbacks.

Popular Varieties of Retaining Walls

1. Dry Boulder

retaining wallDry boulders are large and heavy enough to hold back a large amount of backfill, while simultaneously creating a natural and aesthetically pleasing appearance. They are difficult to put into place and don’t always control water flow effectively, which is why they should be installed by a professional. Before dry boulders are placed, landscapers should also calculate the load to determine how high the wall should be to prevent erosion.

2. Wood

While it is true that wood has been used for centuries for retaining walls, there is a reason you may not see a wall created a century ago standing today. Since wood rots, it isn’t right for irrigated land or parts of the world that receive a lot of rainfall. However, modern pressure-treated wood that has been waterproofed can stay in place for as long as 20 years

3. Brick

Prized for its resilience and ease of installation, brick retaining walls can be installed in a weekend while retaining their shape for years. However, they may require additional bracing to hold back dirt, depending on how high the wall is. Brick retaining walls also require proper drainage to remain stable.
