Most drivers are aware that they should get an oil change at certain intervals. The standard rule of thumb is to follow your car’s manual, which usually recommends an oil change every 5,000 or 7,500 miles. But, what if you don’t drive your car often?  You’ll actually need to change your vehicle’s oil more frequently.

What’s the Point?

An oil change removes the old oil from a car’s engine and replaces it, which lubricates the many moving parts of the engine. The oil also absorbs the heat caused by the friction of these moving parts, allowing the engine to function without overheating.

Why Do You Need Oil Changes More Frequently?

oil changesOver time, whether you drive the car or not, oil breaks down and becomes ineffective at lubricating and absorbing the engine’s heat. Gases will blow past an engine’s pistons causing the oil to become slightly contaminated. If a car simply sits with this contaminated oil, it degrades faster. Driving short distances also doesn’t get the oil hot enough to boil condensation from the engine. This causes moisture to collect in the oil, which develops into a creamy sludge that can interrupt the engine’s function.

What Can You Do?

If you have a short commute that results in a few miles driven each day, or if you have a second car that sits on display more than it’s driven, you should get an oil change every 1,000 miles or at least twice a year. As an alternative, you can take the vehicle on longer drives on the weekend to stimulate the oil and prevent premature disintegration.
