If you’re moving a car to vehicle storage for a few months, it’s important to do some prepping before you drive it into a unit to protect the car and its engine. If you simply park the vehicle and lock the door, you may experience mechanical issues later. Here are a few tips to keep the car in top condition while you’re away.

5 Ways to Prepare for Long-Term Vehicle Storage

1. Choose the Right Storage Location

Find a storage location that offers amenities like convenient 24/7 access and on-site management. A facility with individual door alarms will ensure the car is safe in your absence.

2. Add Gas & Change the Oil

3. Add Air to the Tires

The air in car tires can also leak out, so fill them up beforehand. This will minimize the likelihood of the tires going flat while the car is in storage.

4. Clean the Car

Vacuum up the interior, so it’s clean for when you use the car next. Also, get a car wash or wipe down the exterior to prevent stains from bird droppings, pollen, and sap that could damage the paint over time.

5. Check the Battery

When a battery isn’t used for a long time, it will lose some of its charge. Before placing the car in vehicle storage, charge the battery. If possible, start the car every week or so while it’s in storage and let it run for a bit with the unit door open. This will prevent the battery from draining and keep the engine lubricated, so it won’t dry out.
