Whether your style is traditional or contemporary, a granite countertop is always a smart choice because it’s classy, durable, and available in a broad spectrum of colors and patterns. If you’ve recently had one installed during a home remodeling project or were just considering it, you may be wondering about the maintenance. Here, the team at Big Island Countertops in Hilo, HI, has compiled a quick list of do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Apply a sealant.

Although a granite countertop isn’t as porous as one made of marble, if liquids are left on top of an unsealed surface for too long, it can absorb them and stain. Apply a sealant every 3-5 years to prevent blemishes.

Clean spills ASAP.

granite countertopEven if your granite countertop is sealed, you should still wipe up any spills, especially if they’re greasy or highly pigmented. As long as you get to them immediately, they won’t be difficult to clean; a bit of dish soap and water is usually all you need.

Don’t:

Use harsh cleaning solutions.

If heavy-duty spills or stains don’t respond to dish soap and water, use a cleaning solution—just makes sure it’s formulated for granite. Don’t use acidic solutions, even if they’re homemade mixtures of vinegar or lemon, since these can break down the sealant and fade the colors.

Use scratchy sponges.

Avoid using rough, scratchy sponges that may damage the countertop. A basic washcloth made of cotton or microfiber will suffice.
