As a responsible dog owner, you know spay/neuter is crucial to the health and happiness of your pet, but that is little comfort when having to deal with the stress of going through surgery and recovery. While your furry family member will be in and out of the clinic in no time, you’ll have to keep him or her from strenuous activities for at least a couple of weeks. For playful pups, this can be quite a challenge! Use the following tips to help your dog enjoy a successful recovery.

4 Tips to Keep a Dog Relaxed After Spay/Neuter

1. Keep Them Confined

Before bringing your pup home from surgery, prepare a small, safe place where he can recover in peace. Once home, confine him to the same room you’re in to make him feel comfortable, and if you have to go out, keep him in a crate or confine him to a small room and install a baby gate. If your dog likes to race to the door when someone arrives, keep him on a leash and restrained when you’re expecting company.

2. Watch Your Favorite TV Show Together

Some dogs love belly rubs, but you’ll have to put these on hold while their incision heals. Have your dog lie on the couch or on his or her bed near you and watch your favorite soap opera or something similar, not something with running animals or motorcycles.

3. Give Them a Treat That Keeps Them Occupied

Some dog toys feature deep holes for hiding treats or dollops of peanut butter, which will keep your pup occupied for a while. You can also freeze some peanut butter or special doggie spray cheese inside one to keep them licking longer.

4. Work on Easy Commands

If your dog aims to please, he or she might be interested in using their downtime to get ahead! After the first day after surgery, try working on essential commands like sit and stay, and give them treats and praise when they master them. Not only will this strengthen your bond and challenge their memorization skills, but it will also put them right where you want them—sitting still!
