Did you know that much of your routine cleaning is also perfect preparation for interior house painting? Double the return on your time by giving your walls a much-needed refurbishment. Paint is an investment in the value of the home and an easy and affordable way to update the mood and feel of your interior decoration.

Cleaning Tasks That Prep for Painting

Deep Dusting

Dusting is one of those chores that is easily overlooked, especially in hard to reach corners or on moldings and baseboards. Clearing grime and cobwebs off these surfaces is the first step for masking and painting. You may want to take down artwork, mirrors, and other wall decorations to dust as well—once they are down it’s an easy next step to paint.

Washing Walls & Windows

If you take down window treatments to dust and wash windows, keep them down. Follow window washing by masking edges with tape in preparation for painting.

Sending Rugs for Cleaning

A deep clean can include sending area rugs and carpets to the cleaners or for repair. Take advantage of their absence to put down your drop cloths and begin your painting project.

Chimney Sweep

If you have a fireplace, you will want to have the chimney cleaned during the warm weather. It’s best to schedule this dusty task before you have paint drying. Likewise, have this done before you wash your walls.

Repairing or Patching Walls

Plan to repair holes or damage to walls before painting as part of your overall cleaning and refurbishing plan. Sand your spackle before dusting those baseboards, or you’ll have to do it over again.

Washing Carpets & Floors

Wait until your painting is finished and drop cloths are removed to do a thorough deep clean of carpets and floors. If your projects list includes refinishing a wood floor, finish that dusty job before painting.
