The risks of smoking have been recognized in the medical field for many years. Today, there is a wealth of evidence linking smoking to serious illnesses—one of which is lung cancer. With their main hospital located in Onamia, MN, and several other facilities nearby, Mille Lacs Health System encourages longtime smokers to get screened for lung cancer.

A Hospital’s Guide to Lung Cancer Screenings for Smokers

Why Should Smokers Get Screened?

In the U.S., 80-90% of lung cancer cases are attributed to cigarette smoking. There are more than 7,000 chemicals found within tobacco smoke, 70 of which are known carcinogens. Cigarette smokers are 15 to 30 times more likely to get lung cancer.

While the American Cancer Society® confirms quitting is still the best means of lowering cancer risks, screenings are helpful for identifying lung tumors before outward signs of cancer manifest. The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat.

Who Should Get Screened?

hospitalHigh-risk patients are ideal for screenings. This category includes individuals aged 55 to 74 who have smoked a pack a day for at least 30 years and still smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. It is recommended that these individuals undergo low-dose screenings every year through the age of 74 and as long as they are in good health.

Why Are Low-Dose Scans Best?

Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) employs the use of low doses of radiation to form detailed pictures of the lung. In addition to exposing patients to lower doses of radiation than traditional screening methods, it depicts tumors more clearly than regular X-rays.

If you fall within the high-risk category for lung cancer, schedule an appointment to be screened with Mille Lacs Health System’s new low-dose lung scan.
