Chemical drain cleaning solutions are a popular choice when it comes to clearing a clog, but if not used properly, they can damage pipes and become a health hazard. If you want to avoid putting harsh chemicals down your drain, there are a number of other do-it-yourself drain cleaning options to try before you make a call to a plumber.

DIY Drain Cleaning Without Chemicals

1. Plunger

drain cleaningThe plunger is a safe, reliable, and effective tool that should have a place in every home. You can use a regular-sized plunger, but they do make them in smaller sizes specifically for sinks. The key to plunging is to use steady, back-and-forth motions for one to two minutes while keeping the overflow vent covered. The pressure this creates may dislodge the clog.

2. Baking Soda & Vinegar

Pour equal parts of baking soda and vinegar down the drain, starting with the baking soda. Wait three to five minutes, then pour boiling water down the drain. The reaction of the baking soda and vinegar plus the heat from the boiling water should create enough pressure to break down and release the clog.

3. Regular Soda

Using soda like Pepsi™ or Coca-Cola® to clear clogs is unconventional but effective. The phosphoric acid and other dissolving agents found in these beverages breaks down dirt and debris. As with the baking soda and vinegar, follow this up with boiling water.

4. Drain Snake

If you don’t have any luck with the above DIY tips, you may need to make a trip to the hardware store to purchase a drain snake. These are relatively inexpensive and simple to use. Simply feed the snake into the drain until you reach the blockage. Then rotate the handle in the opposite direction so the snake grabs the clog. Slowly pull it out.

Although most of these chemical-free, DIY drain cleaning tips will work for small clogs, larger blockages may require a professional. If you’ve tried all of the above and still have a clogged drain, call the plumbers at Cox Construction & Plumbing. They’ll use their 30+ years of experience to locate the blockage and clear it.
