Sensitive teeth can be painful and inconvenient, preventing you from enjoying hot beverages or frozen desserts. Fortunately, it’s a treatable condition. The dentists at Gladstein Dental Center in New Britain, CT, understands how uncomfortable oral sensitivity can be and share the causes and treatments below.

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Enamel erosion is one of the most common causes of tooth pain and sensitivity to heat or cold. When enamel wears away, the tooth is susceptible to bacteria which can lead to decay, resulting in exposed nerves. These sensitive nerves send pain signals to the brain when you eat something hot or cold.

Cavities and loose fillings can also cause sensitivity to temperature changes. If your tooth sensitivity is sudden and restricted to one tooth or a couple of teeth, it may be the cause of a cavity or loose or missing filling.

Receding gums, a result of gingivitis, is another common cause. Beneath the enamel is a layer of coating called dentin. In a healthy mouth, gums protect dentin from exposure, but without that protection, dentin is susceptible to sensitivity and pain.

How Can You Treat It?

dentistIf you’ve had prior treatments, such as fillings, on the teeth, see the dentist to have the tooth repaired with a filling or crown. If there’s another underlying issue, such as receding gums or enamel erosion, the dentist may recommend using a sensitivity toothpaste with potassium nitrate to reduce pain. If the problem has progressed enough to require medical treatment, they may recommend a sealant or another procedure to treat the underlying cause. You can also reduce sensitivity by brushing gently and limiting acidic foods and beverages, including coffee and alcohol.
