Summer is finally here, and all that warm weather means your family will be spending more time outside. Unfortunately, humans are not the only creatures that enjoy getting outdoors when the weather warms up—mosquitoes do, too. Nothing is more unpleasant than getting bitten while enjoying the backyard. While an exterminator will be able to help prevent the worst of the infestations, you still need to know when it’s time to schedule a pest control appointment. Here are a few warnings to watch for this summer.

4 Key Signs It’s Time to Call Your Mosquito Exterminator

1. Standing Water

ExterminatorMosquitoes breed in standing water. Not limited to ponds and puddles, this includes bird baths, kiddie pools, and even sunken areas around sprinkler heads. Look for signs of standing water around the house and in the backyard. If any are present, call an exterminator immediately. The sooner they treat the area, the less likely it is that any mosquito eggs will hatch.

2. Inspect the Gutters

After a rainstorm, watch your home’s gutter system to ensure that water is flowing through the piping to a designated drainage area. If anything looks amiss or water starts flowing over the side of the gutters, it may be best to schedule a pest control appointment. Clogged gutters are a haven for mosquitoes, rats, roaches, and countless other pests. In addition to cleaning the gutters, you’ll need to treat any pest damage that might have occurred.

3. Piles of Debris Around the Yard

Spring yardwork has a way of leaving behind piles of leaves and trimmings. Before the family starts spending time in the yard, take a look behind the bushes and in the corners of the yard for any piles of debris or trash that might have collected over time. These piles capture moisture and make it an appealing habitat for those annoying mosquitoes.

4. Potted Plants

Potted plants may add color and pizzazz to your home’s exterior, but they can also attract mosquitos. Moisture often collects in the bottom of the pot, forming puddles of stagnant water at the base of the plant. Periodically inspect your potted plants for moisture buildup and avoid overwatering them throughout the summer. If puddles have collected for an extended period, move the plants away from the house and call a pest control professional. Bringing the plants inside risks introducing mosquitoes to the interior of the home.
