Finding ways to keep teen drivers safe is an important task for parents and guardians. One easy way to give you peace of mind that your new driver is safe behind the wheel after completing driving school is to put together a safety kit for their vehicle. Here’s what it should include.

Items to Include in a Car Safety Kit

1. First Aid Kit

Keep a stocked first aid kit in the trunk. Include bandages, alcohol wipes, antibacterial ointment, hand sanitizer, and gauze, as well as small medical scissors and basic splint items. Consider travel packs of ibuprofen, and for females, sanitary pads and tampons.

2. Necessary Tools

Put together a complete set of tools for changing a tire. Make sure there is a jack, a wrench to undo the bolts, and a spare tire as well as a flare, a flashlight, and extra batteries for nighttime. Also, include a tire gauge that will help your teen check tire pressure and a simple toolkit.

3. Automotive Necessities

Include windshield wiper fluid and tire sealant as well as an ice scraper and a reliable set of jumper cables. You may want a small bag of cat litter to help with traction in icy weather.

4. Safety Items

In the glove compartment, have emergency information listed along with a pen and paper. Keep a seatbelt cutter and window breaking tool in there, and don’t forget a spare smartphone charger. Also have a small fire extinguisher on hand.

5. Emergency Pack

In a separate bag, pack a set of extra clothes and sneakers along with bottled water and non-perishable snacks. Include a pack of scent-free baby wipes, a warm blanket, and a rain poncho so that your driving school graduate is ready for all types of weather. Consider a small stash of cash in case they need to purchase gas, food, or other necessities.
