Building your dream home is an exciting process with plenty of steps. From preparing the lot to putting on the finishing touches in the interior, an ideal residence takes a lot of planning and construction work. For a better understanding of what building a new home requires, consider these five steps that are essential to the process.

5 Steps to Building a Brand-New Home

1. Land Surveying

Once you’ve settled on a lot, a land survey should be performed before construction begins. A surveyor will map out the area and mark it with stakes. You can be involved with this process and help decide on the placement of the structure.

2. Floor Plan Design

Without a floor plan, builders can’t start their work. A construction company or design firm can offer a variety of popular layouts, or you can work with them to create a custom design. As the homeowner, you can also make tweaks to premade home designs to best fit your needs.

3. Foundation & Framing

constructionAfter you’ve finalized your floor plan and had the property staked, the heavy construction will begin. If necessary, the area where the structure will be placed will have trees and plants cleared out, and holes will be dug for the home’s footing and foundation. The cement foundation will be poured and reinforced with steel rods called rebar, providing a durable surface for your home to stand on. Once the foundation is set, the wooden framing will go up, which is essentially the skeleton of the home, including its walls, ceilings, and roof. Next, the windows, siding, and roofing materials are installed.

4. Insulation

Once the walls are up, they’ll need to be insulated to make your home more energy-efficient. Foam, fiberglass, and cellulose are popular insulation options, with the former usually being blown in and the latter two installed in sheets or blankets. Whatever material you choose, it should reduce temperature fluctuations inside your home.

5.  Drywall

Once the insulation is in, it’s time for drywall. Your house will look like it’s coming together at this stage. Contractors will hang the drywall with either nails or screws, and then it is ready to be primed and painted.
