The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the human body. It runs from the lower spine, through the buttocks, along the back of the thigh, and down to the ankle, connecting the spinal cord with the muscles of the leg and foot. Sciatic nerve pain is often debilitating because it can radiate from the lower back down the thigh and may even extend below the knee. Before you can effectively treat it, though, you must determine its underlying cause.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Pain?

Sciatica is the result of a pinched or compressed nerve, which might occur because of a herniated disc, a bone spur, an abnormal growth like a tumor, or nerve damage. Risk factors of compressed or pinched nerves include obesity, old age, diabetes, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Sciatic nerve pain is different from typical lower back pain because the pinching of the nerve causes very distinct symptoms. The most common symptom is pain that radiates from the lower back all the way to the thighs or ankles. At various times the pain might be burning, sharp, or throbbing, and it typically worsens when you sneeze, cough, or sit for an extended period of time. Most people experience these symptoms on only one side of their body. Tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness in the affected leg are also common.

How Can You Prevent Sciatic Nerve Pain?

sciatic nerve painPeople who have had sciatica once may experience it again at some point, because the nerve becomes more vulnerable to pinching. But there are steps everyone can take to prevent the condition—or at least minimize the pain when it does occur. For example, maintaining good posture and using ergonomic furniture will prevent the back from twisting or hunching in such a way that irritates the sciatic nerve. Additionally, exercising regularly will strengthen your core, which will help the spine maintain proper alignment.
