Swimming is a low-impact exercise that addresses every muscle, as well as your cardiovascular system. However, swimming laps is difficult when you don’t have much space. Whether you’re in a small pool or relegated to a particular area, here are a few ways to get a good workout in.

How to Exercise in a Small or Above-Ground Pool

1. Tread Water

Simply supporting yourself will activate every muscle in your body. Lift your legs and tread water. While doing so, you can do flutter kicks, jog in place, do bicycle kicks, and work out your arms. Just refrain from resting your feet against the bottom of the pool until you’ve finished the interval.

2. Squat Jumps

With your arms raised overhead, squat down as low as possible without dunking your head under and then jump as hard as you can. You’ll notice the resistance of the water achieves the same effect as squatting with a barbell on your shoulders.

3. Water Weights

You can do seemingly endless upper body workouts with water weights. Tricep extensions, bicep curls, and lateral raises will work out every muscle in the arm, and underwater rows and forward presses can activate the chest and back. Just remember to make slow, controlled motions, and try high-intensity intervals if you want to add a cardio element.
