Derived from the Bedford area of the state, Indiana limestone is thought to be some of the highest quality quarried stone in the world. It has been used throughout history in the construction of iconic buildings and monuments. Below, Lexington Cut Stone of Kentucky talks about some of the magnificent structures created using this iconic stone, which exemplifies the durability and beauty that make this country what it is today.

Indiana Limestone: 3 Iconic Structures That Feature This Material

1. Grand Central Station

Constructed in 1871, Grand Central Station remains a vital transportation hub to this day. It’s also a famous landmark in NYC, with more than 21.5 million visitors on a yearly basis. Not only is the façade of the terminal constructed from limestone, but a group of sculptures sitting in front of the building was also created using this material. Along with its cultural importance, Grand Central Station is also known for its intricately carved design. One historian even described it as an architectural wonder.

2. The Pentagon

LimestoneLocated in Virginia, the Pentagon is both symbolically important and the seat of the U.S. Department of Defense. Much like Grand Central Station, the façade of the Pentagon was created using limestone. Because steel was in short supply, much of the building was created using concrete. In fact, concrete ramps were built instead of escalators to accommodate for the lack of steel.

3. Lincoln Memorial

In 1914, work began on the Lincoln Memorial as a tribute to the United States’ 16th president. It stands directly across from the Washington Monument in the National Mall in Washington, D.C. While the monument is constructed from many different materials, the walls and columns are all constructed from Indiana limestone.

Indiana limestone’s inherent features make it attractive for construction. Not only is it durable, but it’s also quite beautiful and can stand up to the test of time.
