Painting the outside of the house is a cost-effective way to give it an update and increase the property’s curb appeal. But before you begin any exterior painting project, there are a few preparation steps to take. Here, the painting team at Dennis Winge Painting & Decorating in St. Paul, MN, shares a few tips to enhance the look of the residence.

What to Do Before Starting an Exterior Painting Project

1. Wash the Siding

If you apply the paint to a dirty surface, you’ll wind up with less-than-ideal results. You’ll also need to redo the work sooner since the product won’t last as long on a filthy wall. Before you start, clean off the area with a power washer and use it carefully, so you don’t damage the residence. If you’re not comfortable power washing yourself, hire a professional for the job. If there’s any mold or mildew on the siding, remove it with bleach or a fungicide.

2. Take Down or Cover Other Features

Cover these with a cloth and mark off the borders with painter’s tape to avoid unsightly splotches in the wrong place. For smaller items, like exterior wall decor, take them down until the project is complete.

3. Fix Damage

If there is any damage on the outside of the house, fix it before exterior painting. This ensures the surface is smooth for the paint. Fill in holes, repair cracks, and make any necessary replacements. While extensive issues might delay the project, you’ll achieve longer lasting results.
