As a parent, you’ll enjoy many exciting “firsts” with your child, from their first steps to their first words. Their first visit to the dentist may be less exciting—and more stressful—but it’s no less important. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends taking children to the dentist for their initial checkup by their first birthday, or when they begin teething. Here’s how to prepare for that initial visit.

Plan Ahead

Begin by researching family and pediatric dentists in your area. You want to find someone who has experience treating children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. Take the time to get recommendations from family and friends and read online reviews. Once you find a dentist you like on paper, meet them in person, without your child present, so you can make sure they’re a good fit for your family.

After selecting a provider, schedule an initial appointment for your child. Ask the staff if the new patient forms can be downloaded from their website. If not, have them mail you the forms so you can complete them at home. Take some time to write down any questions you have about your baby’s oral health and how to care for their teeth and gums.

Prepare Your Little One

dentistOne-year-olds won’t be able to comprehend a visit to the dentist and what it all means, but there are still some ways you can prepare them. Feed them and put them down for a nap before the visit, so they aren’t tired or hungry. Bring along a snack, a favorite toy, and one or two other items that will make your little one feel comfortable and safe. Taking them to the dentist at such a young age will help prevent the fears many children feel as they get older.

Bring Reinforcements

If you can, bring only one child to the appointment, and bring a spouse, partner, or another caregiver, so they can help if your little one gets fussy. One of you can soothe them while the other asks questions and takes notes. This ensures you don’t miss anything important. If you do miss something or you forget to ask a question, you can always call the office later.
