Sharpening your child’s math skills is an important part of early education and kindergarten readiness. However, numbers can be confusing and intimidating for many children. Luckily, there are ways you can make at-home math practice fun and engaging.

3 Early Education Tips to Make Math Fun at Home

1. Play With Your Laundry

early educationClassifying is a basic preschool skill youngsters need to master before they can move onto more complex math techniques. Parents can turn laundry folding into a fun sorting lesson. Present your child with clothing in different colors, patterns, and designs, and help them create piles with similar pieces. Once they’ve finished sorting, help them count each pile and then arrange them in order from greatest to least.

2. Take Measurements

Another fun way to help your little one understand math is to measure and cut strings that are one inch, one foot, one yard, and so on. Lay them out and ask your child to arrange them from biggest to smallest before helping them see how many times smaller strings fit across larger measurements. From there, your child can have fun taking measurements of items throughout your home and showing you what they’ve learned.

3. Enjoy a Snack Break

Snack time is an excellent opportunity to work on your child’s addition and subtraction skills. Before they begin munching, engage them in a game of questions about their food. For example: “You have 10 crackers, but you eat four. How many are left?” Incorporating these simple conversations during meals can help make math easier and more fun for your child, which will translate into long-term success with early education.
