Installing new windows correctly is of the utmost importance. In fact, if they’re not put in right the first time, they may not be sealed properly, and that can ultimately lead to water damage in your home. Windows Plus in Cincinnati has been providing door and window installation services for over 30 years, and they want you to know the vital facts about properly installing a window.

When you hire a professional to install a window, you want to make sure it’s done right. Here are some things to look for:

  • Measurements: The open space where your window will be placed is known as the rough opening. The areas that should be measured are the width of the top, middle, and bottom of the rough opening, as well as the height at both sides and in the middle. Any difference of more than an inch should be corrected with tapered filler strips to make the measurements match.
  • Waterproofing: Self-adhesive waterproof membrane is place around the rough opening. Membrane strips are placed on the bottom first, then strips are added along the sides, overlapping the bottom one. The final strip is placed along the top and should overlap the two side strips. The membrane should be layered so that any water along the walls is directed away from your home.
  • Installation: Put your window frame into the rough opening and adjust the placement by moving it until the gaps between the window sides and the studs on the inside wall are equal. You will need a second person on the inside to help you with this part. Once you have the window in the right position, tack it in place at one upper corner, but do not drive the nail in all the way.
  • Leveling and sealing: Use a level to make sure your window is aligned on all sides and secure your window—but as before, do not drive the nail in completely. Measure the window from corner to corner; if the window is square, then you can drive in the nails all the way in. Once the window is completely secured, apply the bottom and side waterproof membranes in the same format as before, making sure to put it flush against the window frame. Caulk the top edge of the window and apply the flashing, and then fit the sash into to the window frame. On the inside, fill any gaps with expanding polyurethane foam to keep out drafts.
