5 Fun Activities for Senior Companionship, Waterloo, Illinois

Companionship is extremely important for seniors. They need to feel loved, and their quality of life is significantly increased if they can spend time with their loved ones. Finding something to do with your senior is easy; pick something that you both enjoy and that is within their current abilities. To give you some ideas, the elderly care staff at The Rosedale House have shared a few of their favorite activities for seniors in Waterloo, IL.

Senior Companionship Ideas

1. Do a Puzzle or Craft

This is a good idea for a rainy day or if your loved one isn’t too mobile. A puzzle or a craft – such as creating a family tree – are good ways to flex their mental muscles rather than their physical ones. It can keep their mind sharp as they get older and let you chat while you work together.

2. Go for a Walk

A scenic walk gets a senior moving while getting them outside. Fresh air and exercise are both extremely important for their physical and mental health. Choose a walking trail that’s not too tough and let them set the pace. Many community parks have paved, flat walkways that are good for this activity.

3. Go to Local Events

Heading to a local event gives a senior a reason to get dressed up and is something they may be excited about for weeks ahead of time. If they are a sports fan, take them to a game to support the local team. Other options include plays, book readings, or art displays.

companionship4. Plant a Garden

Gardening is a good way to get moving, take in the sun, and enjoy the satisfaction of cultivating something. Depending on your loved one’s abilities, this could be as simple as planting a few flowers or growing a full vegetable garden to harvest together. Just be sure to protect them from the sun; have them wear sunscreen and a hat, and keep them hydrated with plenty of water.

5. Read

This is another good activity for seniors who aren’t as mobile. Reading to them can keep their mind engaged while allowing them to relax in the comfort of their retirement home. If a loved one has dementia, reading them a book they used to love is a great way to jog their memory.

The team at The Rosedale House offers plenty of companionship and activities for their residents. They have group trips and events such as holiday parties and community festivals. Whether your senior loved one needs close monitoring or wants an independent living space with comfortable amenities, they can provide it.
