Dental crowns can help correct cracked or otherwise damaged teeth. While traditional crowns typically take weeks from start to finish, the Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC®) system offers a shorter timeline and less discomfort. Here, the dentists at Darr Dentistry of Thomasville, NC, share the following information to help you make the best decision for your dental health.

What Are CEREC Dental Crowns?

They are custom-fitted dental apparatuses that can correct cracked or chipped teeth. Dentists use innovative high-tech procedures, such as computer-aided manufacturing and design, while you are undergoing a dental exam. These techniques expedite the process and remove the need to place a temporary crown while the permanent piece is milled offsite. Because they are made of ceramic, they can easily match a variety of shades. Patients prefer these more than metal crowns, which are easily visible.

What Can I Expect From the Procedure?

First, the dentist will digitally scan the damaged tooth to create a precise impression. Then, they transfer the impression to a computer aided manufacturing program, which will lay out the exact dimensions of the ceramic crown. From here, a machine mills the tooth out of a ceramic block. After about 15 minutes, the tooth should be complete. The dentist will make tweaks to the color to make sure the shades match. They’ll then use cement to affix the crown to the tooth.

What Are Some Benefits?

Dental CrownsInstead of waiting up to two weeks for a new crown, you’ll receive it in one appointment. Additionally, the use of digital imaging decreases the chance of the dentist crafting the crown incorrectly. CEREC crowns have an improved aesthetic appeal and are highly durable. If you care for the crown using proper dental hygiene, it will typically last between 5 and 15 years.
