Heat pumps are alternatives to traditional HVAC systems that many homeowners are turning to. Despite its name, however, this equipment can provide cooling, too. Here, the experienced heating contractors at Cowboy’s Heating & Air in Ohio’s Miami Valley discuss heat pumps and some of their benefits.

What Are Heat Pumps?

heat pumpA heat pump is an HVAC system component that draws outside air into the home for conditioning. As it uses a mechanical-compression refrigeration system, it can be reversed to both heat and cool a room. It consists of an outdoor unit that looks like a central air conditioner and an indoor unit called an air handler.

How Do They Work?

Heat pumps work by transferring air from one place to another through a refrigeration process. Even if air outside may seem cold, there is always some heat energy present. The pump uses a small amount of energy to draw the warm air from outside into the home by way of a heat exchanger, which is then transferred to a refrigerant. Then the refrigerant allows the heat to flow through a compressor that lowers the volume of the refrigerant and generates heat. Another exchanger transfers the generated heat throughout the house. During the spring and summer months, the direction of the air flow is reversed. Instead of pulling air in, it moves warm air out of the house, similar to an air conditioner.

Why Should You Install a Heat Pump?

These systems are highly efficient because they don’t have to burn fuel to create heat; they simply transfer warm air inside from the outdoors. This feature makes heat pumps more eco-friendly than gas-burning furnaces. Heat pumps also eliminate the need to install multiple HVAC systems into your home. Because it can reverse air flow to heat and cool, you won’t need a separate air conditioner or heater to keep your home comfortable throughout the year.
