Smartphones have become such an important piece of our daily lives. They are much more than a mobile phone and help us search the internet, share on social media, google everything/anything and take photos.

There are three primary factors to consider before you upgrade your phone:

  1. Software Updates
  2. Camera
  3. Damage

1. Software Updates

If you can no longer update your phone or it is not supported by the manufacturer, you should definitely upgrade your phone.  Software updates are a critical aspect of protecting your information and protecting you from cyber attacks, bugs, malware, etc.  In addition to security, the latest apps might require the latest software updates.  For example, in order to use Group FaceTime announced in the latest iOS software update, your phone would need to be updated to that release.  If you have an iPhone, Apple frequently provides software updates for phones for several years and supports many generations of phones. However, not every device is capable of running the latest software operating system.

2. Camera

The best camera is the one in your pocket. Most people carry it with them all the time and regardless of megapixel count or features picture qualty is very good.  As each new phone is introduced throughout the year, a key marketing selling point is always the camera and picture quality. A big trend in smartphones now is dual cameras that enable optical zooming and improved image stabilization. Features are also always changing with every new update such as the the addition of portrait mode and emojis.

3. Damage

Phones are very durable if handled appropriately and well maintained.  However, accidents happen and screens get cracked, batteries wear out and internal components get damaged such as cameras and speakers. All of those items can be repaired. However, you need to balance the cost of the repairs vs. the cost of replacement.  If the only issue is a cracked screen it is very cost effective to repair.  However, if the screen is cracked and the phone can no longer be updated and you are not happy with the features of your phone, it wouldn’t be worth fixing and you should upgrade.
