Sports drinks are often perceived among parents as a healthy way to keep children hydrated. But a children’s dentist would recommend a better option for quenching thirst: water. Here, Kapolei Keiki Dental, a leading pediatric dentist in Hawaii, shares some reasons why H2O outperforms sports drinks.

A Children’s Dentist Lists 3 Reasons to Drink Water Instead of Sports Drinks

1. No Calories

One compelling reason to fill your little one’s bottle with water instead of other beverages: water has zero calories, while sports drinks like Gatorade® may contain 50 calories in 8 ounces. For endurance athletes, replenishing the body with these extra calories may be necessary. But children’s sports practices and games are usually not long or rigorous enough to demand the extra calorie intake. In fact, too much could actually outweigh the benefits of exercise over time.

2. Zero Sugars

Sports drinks are also notoriously high in sugars. They have a high glycemic score, causing blood sugar levels to spike. Not only can excess sugar contribute to tooth decay and hyperactivity, but it can also increase a child’s risk for developing obesity and type 2 diabetes. To keep cavities at bay and avoid long-term health risks, the American Heart Association recommends children take in no more than 25 grams of sugar per day. Most types of sports drinks exceed this amount, with some popular brands containing nearly double the daily recommended amount of sugar.

3. Natural Hydration

While you probably associate this with what is put on your plate, you must also be mindful of what you’re pouring. Most sports drinks contain very little natural fruit juice, if any. Water is nature’s best source of pure hydration. If your child wants something more flavorful than plain water, you can diffuse berries or sliced fruit in their sports bottle.
