If you want to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles without undergoing an invasive facelift, Botox® may be the answer. This cosmetic procedure can produce dramatic results with virtually no downtime. Despite how simple getting Botox is, however, it’s natural to be nervous before the appointment. Fortunately, you can ease much of the stress and anxiety surrounding the procedure by preparing for it in advance. Below, Lauren A. Daman, M.D., P.C. explains information to keep in mind before your appointment.

Know What to Expect

botoxAdministering Botox is relatively simple. Your doctor will inject it directly into the skin near the wrinkles and lines that you are attempting to erase. Common injection sites include the forehead, temples, corners of the mouth, and chin. The injections may cause some mild discomfort for a few brief moments, but they will not be painful. Depending on the circumstances, your provider may apply a topical anesthetic before performing the procedure. Once the ointment has dulled the area, a medical technician will hold an ice pack on it for a few seconds. Your provider will then wipe the section with an antiseptic and administer the Botox.

Take Steps to Prevent Bruising

Botox does not require any kind of downtime, which means you could theoretically schedule the appointment on your lunch break and be okay to return to work. The most common side effect is bruising at the site of injection, which you can prevent by avoiding muscle relaxants, blood thinners, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the days leading up to the procedure. You can also apply Arnica cream before the appointment and an ice pack afterward if you are especially prone to bruising.
