There are many decisions to make when planning a funeral or memorial service, and the sheer number of cremation urns available can be overwhelming. But despite all the possible options, narrowing your choices need not be a painstaking process. Budget may be your first instinct as a starting point, but other considerations will further simplify the deciding process.

How to Select the Right Cremation Urn

1. Consider Purpose

How you intend to use the cremation urn will dictate the type you need to buy. Some people choose to display the urn somewhere in their home or have it permanently housed in a mausoleum. Others scatter the ashes or divide the remains among family members. Once you decide what you’ll do with the remains, you’ll have a better idea of what type of urn to purchase.

2. Choose the Right Size

cremationThe general recommendation is to have one cubic inch for every pound of the deceased’s weight prior to their death. However, if you plan to divide the ashes, you’ll want to select several smaller urns. If there is a surviving spouse who also wishes to be cremated after their death, consider a companion urn, which is large enough to contain the ashes of both people. Remember, too, that mausoleums and cemeteries may have size restrictions due to limited space.

3. Select Appropriate Materials

Cremation urns are available in a wide range of materials, from biodegradable options to stones such as marble. The materials you select will depend on both your budget and the urn’s purpose. Lightweight options are most appropriate for families who intend to scatter the ashes. For permanent displays, however, long-lasting materials like stone, metal, or wood are more appropriate.
