3 Tips for Parents Sending Children to Camp for the First Time, Bowie, Texas

Sleepaway camp is an exciting summer activity for children. It allows them to experience independence, enjoy the outdoors, and make memories that will last a lifetime. As a parent, however, the drop-off day can be emotional and challenging. Below are a few tips that can help you prepare for the send-off.

How to Prepare for Sleepaway Camp Drop-Off

1. Be Excited

Your child will notice if you’re feeling anxious or upset, and this will make them more afraid for the upcoming experience. If your child has been making any indication that they are scared, take the time to reassure them and talk to them about all the fun activities they can look forward to at camp.
image2. Only Contact the Camp for an Emergency

Being away from home encourages independence and allows your child to learn to be responsible for themselves. To ensure they immerse themselves in the experience and make the most of their time there, limit your calls to camp director, so only contact the camp in an emergency.

3. Get your camper involved!

Include your child in selecting activities. Discus options and look at activities and videos on the camp website.  Talk to them about  your experiences at camp, the things they will learn and friends they will make.  Involve him/her in any shopping, packing that needs to be done.

3. Plan Activities to Fill Your Time

To avoid spending the majority of your time missing your child or worrying about them, plan various activities to fill your time.  Do something fun, get some projects done, or schedule lunch with an old friend or with another loved one. You may even want to go on your own camping trip, so you can compare experiences with your child when they return.

If you want to send your child to a camp that specializes in providing activities and Christian teachings for children with learning differences enroll them in Charis Hills Camp in Sunset, TX. They offer a wide range of activities and nature outings, from boating and fishing to music and sign language. Call (940) 964-2145 to speak with Liz or Colleen and visit their website for their full list of activities.
