Long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon can lead to lung cancer, which is why it is recommended that every homeowner re-tests their home for radon every two years. Testing your home is the only way to discover if there is a high level of the radioactive gas present in a house. Many people make the mistake of thinking that once they’ve tested and received results showing levels below 4.0, they do not need to re-test in the future. The truth is that levels can change for a variety of reasons, making it important to retest every two years, even if you have an active radon reduction system in the home.

Reasons to Have Radon Testing Done Bi-Annually

Seasonal Changes

Radon levels tend to fluctuate significantly depending on the season. It’s not uncommon to detect higher levels when a household isn’t running the heater or air conditioner. For this reason, it’s best to retest in alternating seasons. If a homeowner initially has radon testing done in spring or fall, the next test should be conducted in winter or summer.

Structural Changes

radon testingRadon enters homes through cracks and other openings in the foundation, as well as floor gaps, construction joints, and crevices in the walls. So, when renovations are made, there’s been an earthquake, the ventilation has changed, or the ground has shifted underneath a house, a radon contractor should be called to re-test the home.

Changes to Living Arrangements

If a homeowner decides to expand their living space down to the basement, retesting for radon is highly suggested. This is because the gas enters through the lowest level of a home. Therefore, anyone who spends a lot of time in the basement has the potential to be exposed right at the entry point.

Active Radon Reduction System Needs to Be Monitored

Any radon system installed in the United States of America must have a notice posted on the system stating that the home should be re-tested for radon every two years. Radon fans can fail. Radon systems can be damaged. Adding to the home’s structure, may require adding to the radon system.

Though it’s not necessary to have radon testing done any more than bi-annually, it’s imperative to stick to this schedule to prevent unwanted exposure.
