When you turn on your air conditioner to beat the summer heat, the last thing you want to experience is inadequate cooling, or worse: total equipment failure. Fortunately, if you experience AC system problems, you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune on expensive replacement—you may be able to repair the problem on your own. Here are a few simple fixes for some of the most common cooling system problems.

5 Troubleshooting Tips for Broken AC Systems

1. Assess Power Connection

Switch any connections back on that were turned off and see if that resolves the problem. If not, use a multimeter device to test the fuses found in the air conditioner disconnect box. Replace any that are faulty.

2. Check the Filter

If your AC is working harder than it should or is failing to deliver enough cool air to your home, it may be due to a clogged filter. Typically, air filters should be replaced at least once every 90 days.

4. Clean Outdoor Unit

When grass clippings, branches, and other debris find their way into the outdoor unit, they can impact overall AC performance. If the unit is dirty, shut off the entire system and spray it down with a hose. If problems persist, you may need to remove the outside panel and clean off dirty coils with water and a simple detergent solution.

4. Seal Leaking Ducts

Even if your air conditioner seems to be in fine shape, you may find that your home isn’t reaching the right temperature due to leaks in the ductwork. Check all ducts to see if cool air is flowing out of open spaces and seal them with mastic or specialized tape.
