With summer here, homeowners have many seasonal maintenance tasks to tackle. While you may start with planting, managing gardens, and mowing the lawn, you should also keep an eye on your roof, especially if there has been inclement weather recently that may have caused damage. Colorado has a history of severe weather and blistering UV rays that can damage the building products on the exterior of your home. How can you tell if your roof needs attention? Below, Formula Roofing and Remodeling in Denver, CO, shares a few tips for assessing storm damage to your property.

5 Places to Look for Storm Damage

1. Shingles

After a storm, there a few key areas you should check to see if damage has occurred to your home. If you can see the shingles from a window or from the ground, check for bald spots on the shingles or missing shingles on the roof. While it’s not recommended that you climb onto the roof, a visual inspection can often tell you if a closer look is needed. Wind and hail can cause the seal on the underside of the shingles to fail and hang from their original positions at odd angles, or there may be creases in the shingles. Sometimes the only way to see damage is from on the roof. Call a professional roofer to take a closer look.

2. Yard

It may be difficult to see roof damage from the ground without the
assistance of a roofing contractor. Instead, search the yard for clues.
Look for blown off shingles and metal flashing’s that may have come loose during a storm. Hail can cause dents to soft metals on your property, leave splatter marks on stained fences and damage glazing bead on windows. Outdoor furniture, lawn ornaments and grills can all be damaged by high winds.

3. Attic

Storm damage doesn’t just affect the exterior of the home. Sometimes, you may spot water damage in the attic, which can indicate an issue with the roof. After a significant rainfall, inspect the attic walls and joists. If you spot wetness, it’s time to bring in a professional to do repairs.

4. Walls

After major precipitation, look at the interior and exterior walls of your
home. Do any show signs of leaks, like peeling wallpaper or wet plaster? If you see signs of water dripping down the exterior that is not caused by
overhanging trees, it’s possible that storm damage is disrupting the flow
of water down the roof, causing it to skip the gutters and drip down the
walls. This can lead to costly flooding and foundation issues if not
addressed.

5. Gutters

The tiny granules on your shingles help to provide an essential layer of protection for your roof. During severe storms, some of these granules may break loose and make their way into the gutter system and downspouts. While this shouldn’t be an immediate cause for concern, if you find granules in conjunction with the other signs listed above, schedule a free roof
inspection.
