Learning how to write is an incredibly important part of child development. It will allow your little one to succeed in school and help them transition to adulthood. The learning center at Northern Lights Preschool & Child Care in Anchorage, AK, says it’s important to try some activities at home to help your child learn to write. Here, they share a few of their favorite ways to encourage children to write.

A Learning Center’s Guide to Teaching Kids to Write

1. Draw Letters in the Sand

learning centerEven if your little one is still struggling to grip the pencil properly, they can practice writing by using their fingers or a larger object. The next time they’re playing in the sandbox or at the beach, sit with them and write their name in the sand using your hand. Then, have them complete the same activity. This is not only an easy way to incorporate a learning activity into playtime, but the sand makes it simple to wipe away any mistakes or clear space for new, harder words as they improve.

2. Write Thank-You Cards Together

After a birthday or holiday, have your child write out thank-you cards to the loved ones who attended or gave them gifts. You can start by having them write the words “thank you” and their name below your own message. This activity will help them learn how to grip the pen, improving their fine motor skills, and teach them letters, giving them several opportunities to practice at once.

3. Ask Them to Keep a Journal

Children are naturally focused on themselves; this is a normal part of healthy development. You can capitalize on this and help them get creative and learn to write at the same time by asking them to keep a diary. If they’re initially not sure what to discuss, make a few suggestions and let them pick a topic. They don’t need to write much at first; even just a couple of sentences about their most recent vacation or school day will be enough to get them practicing.
