Having a swimming pool can be a wonderful luxury, especially in the middle of the sweltering summer months. Even still, with all of its perks, a pool can be a hazard when not taken seriously. To make yours a safe oasis for everyone in your household, follow the safety tips below.

How to Make Your Swimming Pool Safe

1. Install a Fence

Reduce accidents around your pool by erecting a fence or some other kind of barrier. In Hamilton County, OH, any swimming pool deeper than 24 inches or larger than 150 square feet is required by law to have an enclosure that is at least 48 inches tall. The barrier should also have a self-closing and self-latching gate with the latch placed on the interior and at a height too tall for small children to reach.

2. Add Alarms

poolPlacing alarms around the pool area will help you to act quickly if a young child somehow makes it through the fence. A perimeter alarm acts like an invisible fence and will sound whenever someone breaches the field. You could also employ a pressure-sensitive device, which is placed at the rim of the pool to monitor any changes in the water. If you install no other type of alarm, you still need a gate alarm, which relies on a magnetic strip and will blare a warning whenever it is broken.

3. Install a Safety Pool Cover

While a safety pool cover is similar to a winter cover, it provides extra measures to prevent accidental drowning. The woven mesh or vinyl cover is pulled across the pool and attached securely to anchors on the deck with straps. This makes the material taut so water cannot collect on top.
