Obstetricians

Many women prefer having midwives on their birthing teams. They help ensure the birthing process is safe. The OB team at Oswego County OB-GYN PC understands that several women might not know much about the role of our midwives. Please read more below to learn more about midwifery care.

1. What Are Midwives?

Midwives are licensed health care professionals educated and certified in midwifery. The midwives at Oswego County OB-GYN, Theresa Naro and Malika Iton, are CNMs, Certified Nurse-Midwives. They have registered nurse licenses as well as Master's level education and certification in Midwifery.

2. What Can Midwives Do?

Midwives help over 300,000 women give birth each year in the United States. Along with providing support during the labor and birth processes, midwives perform numerous vital functions for women's health through all stages of life, including: annual well-woman exams, birth control consultations, paps, STD screening, prenatal care, care of the laboring and birthing woman, postpartum or after birth care, postpartum depression screening and care, cesarean first assistant to the OB and many other procedures related to OB-GYN care.

3. Do They Differ From Doulas?

Doulas offer emotional support during labor while midwives provide health care to women both in labor and in other life stages.  Some people refer to doulas as "birth coaches". Midwives on the other hand are able to provide the actual physical care of the mother along with emotional support. Both types of care can be helpful to the laboring woman.
