Summer is fun for many reasons, but it means you need to give your lawn extra care in the heat. Trees are a gorgeous addition to any yard, and your lawn is a major asset to your property. To keep this foliage luscious and enjoy a healthy, beautiful yard this summer, check out these do’s and don’ts, including why you should schedule professional tree services.

Do:

Prune and water trees.

Pruning stimulates growth, so late spring is the perfect time to prune trees to keep them looking full. Minimal summer pruning can be beneficial for preventing disease and controlling overgrowth. If you feel unsafe or are unsure of how to prune trees, call a tree services company to do the work for you. Keeping trees watered in the hot summer months is also vital, so water them around the base two to three times a week at minimum.

Check for pests and tree disease.

Pests like bugs and vermin start to emerge in the warmer weather, so watch for signs of them. This includes discolored leaves, bare spots in the crown of the tree, fungi, or holes in the bark. If you suspect your foliage is under attack by a pest or disease, call a tree services contractor to assess the issue.

Fertilize and water.

The beginning of summer is the perfect time to to fertilize your lawn. Water your grass daily, with a sprinkler system if possible. Doing so in the early morning hours is ideal to keep grass green.

Don’t:

Mow wet grass.

Avoid mowing grass in the morning when it’s wet. Doing so isn’t healthy for growth, and the mower is also more susceptible to damage in these conditions. This is because the matted grass can lead to clogs.

Cut grass too low.

Grass that’s too short becomes weak and more prone to damage from weeds or insects. It’s recommended to cut it no shorter than 3-inches tall to encourage proper growth.

Over-prune trees.

While minimal pruning can be beneficial in the summer, heavy pruning during a season of growth can do more harm than good. The ideal time to do heavier pruning is during the dormant season of winter.
