During pregnancy, expecting mothers go through a myriad of adjustments. As the baby grows, a woman’s body will experience changes in hormones, blood circulation, and even fluid retention. As a result, roughly 15% of pregnant women also go through vision changes. When a woman is expecting or planning a pregnancy, here are three things they should know about potential vision issues.

3 Vision Changes Experienced During Pregnancy

1. Water Retention

It’s common for pregnant women to retain more water than usual. This increase in fluids alters the thickness and shape of the cornea. As a result, mothers may experience minor changes in vision until the baby is born. This is particularly true for mothers that wear corrective eyewear. For this reason, eye doctors advise against undergoing laser eye surgery while pregnant, as vision may shift again after giving birth.

2. Irritation & Dryness

VisionSince water retention during pregnancy and breastfeeding changes the thickness and overall shape of the cornea, pregnant women often notice increased dryness and irritation that requires eye drops. Wearing contact lenses can be uncomfortable during this life phase, so eye doctors often recommend getting fitted for prescription glasses.

3. Eye Disease

Even healthy pregnant women are prone to eye disease if they experience fluid buildup under the retina. This condition is stress-induced and is most common during the first and second trimesters. To ensure proper eye health, mothers should visit the eye doctor for an examination during this period.
