Getting a new puppy or kitten is the start of a long and happy relationship. However, owning a pet is a huge responsibility, and you’ll need to get the right vaccinations to keep your furry friend healthy. The veterinarians at The Pet Clinic in Honolulu, HI, recommend the following vaccinations for puppies and kittens.

Vaccinations for Puppies

1. DHPP & Rabies

At 8 weeks of age, your puppy should star the DHPP sequence. This is a 4-in-1 vaccine that includes Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza. The shot is reboosted at 12 weeks and again at 16 weeks. The rabies vaccine is not required in Hawaii because we are a rabies-free state.  However, if you plan on travelling in and out of the state with your pet, then please consult the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website well in advance of your travel so that your pet may be able to avoid a 120 day quarantine stay.

2. Bordetella and  Leptospirosis

veterinarian. Bordetella, more popularly known as for kennel cough, can contracted anywhere dogs socialize with each other and causes an infection of the trachea and lungs. Leptospirosis is a bacteria spread through soil and standing fresh water (even puddles!) and can cause severe liver and kidney disease.

3. Parasite Prevention

Heartworm prevention should start at 8 weeks with the brand of medication recommended by your veterinarian. These drugs often prevent fleas and ticks too. Deworming for your puppy can be done at 8 weeks and 12 weeks. A fecal test for intestinal parasites is strongly recommended as most commercial dewormers do not treat all parasites.

Vaccinations for Kittens

1. FVRCP and FELV Vaccines

At 8 weeks, your kitten will start the feline viral rhinotracheitis,
calicivirus, and panleukopenia series that is reboosted at 12 and 16 weeks. At 12 weeks, they will also receive the feline leukemia virus vaccine, which is reboosted at 16 weeks.

2. Parasite Prevention

Heartworm medication starts at 8 weeks old, which may also include medication for other pests like fleas and ticks. Deworming should be done at 8 weeks and again at 12 weeks. At this time, they may also get a FELV / FIV Test.  Any new cat or kitten introduced into a home which already has cats residing should be tested for these viruses and tested for intestinal parasites before they are introduced.
