Have you lost a tooth to recent dental trauma, gum disease, or another issue? You may be a candidate for dental implants or bridges. Both are viable for replacing lost or broken teeth, but which is right for you? Here’s a convenient guide to help you learn the differences.

Your Guide to Dental Bridges & Implants

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium rods that support the dental crowns. Once it has fully fused to the jawbone, a process that can take about three to six months, your dentist will place an abutment over the implant and screw the crown in to give the tooth a natural look.

There are two types of dental implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Endosteal implants are placed directly into the jawbone during surgery, while subperiosteal implants are attached with a metal frame directly below the gum line.

What Are Bridges?

Bridges are made up of multiple crowns and used to fill gaps where teeth are missing, and they are supported either by natural teeth or implants on each side. There are three types. Traditional bridges are made of porcelain or ceramic fused with metal. For Maryland bonded bridges, the bridge is made of either plastic or porcelain. A metal framework supports the bridge. Cantilever bridges are generally used in cases when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of where the bridge will be installed.

Which One Is Best for You?

dental implantsImplants are low-maintenance, durable, and should last a lifetime. They also feel and look natural while protecting your jawbone and surrounding teeth. Dental implants are often more expensive, and surgery is required for their installation. The process of getting implants will take multiple appointments over the course of a few months.

Dental bridges do not require surgery, and their installation process takes only a few weeks. They are typically more affordable than implants, but they do not look as natural. They are durable but should be replaced every five to seven years. Factors such as appearance, price, durability, and length of the procedure should be considered in your decision. Visit your dentist to get their assessment as well.
