Marketing News

For many years beef producers have been marketing calves through a program, named VAC 45 by the Texas A&M Extension Service, that adds value at sale time.  It simply means that a producer weans his calf crop at least 45 days before marketing, gives the required vaccinations and grows the calves with a proven nutrition program.  This proven program makes the calves more valuable to buyers.  History shows that it is a win-win situation for both the cow/calf producer and the buyer.  A series of special sales for VAC 45 calves have been scheduled at the Meridian Sale Barn starting in August.  We have the details and can answer your questions.

Mesquite Control

We are moving into the summer months when conditions are good to spray mesquite.  If treating mesquite by spraying leaves, one should apply when leaves are mature with dark green foliage.  The product of choice would be Sendero, by Dow AgroScience.  Sendero should be mixed with water and surfactant and then applied to the mesquite leaves.

Another treatment method is referred to as “basal”.  This involves spraying only the bark-covered stem or tree trunk.  Relegate or Remedy mixed with diesel is the mix to be used in “basal” treatment.  This mesquite treatment can actually be done anytime during the year.  It is also the most economical way to control mesquite.

Bits of Good Information

· While on the cow, calves gain between 1.5 and 2.5 pounds per head / day.  Good milking cows coupled with calves from good genetics will gain the 2.5 pounds/day.  The heavy calves bring the most $ money.

· Cattle need mineral during the summer.  Mineral content in grass starts going down by July 1 and continues into the fall.  Cows with the right mineral level milk better and raise healthier calves.

· A good marketing plan for your calves starts now.  What month will you wean?  Will you save any heifers?  Will you participate in any “value-added” sales?  A good marketing plan can make extra money!

· Be thinking at least 6 months ahead………...most successful ventures come from planning to succeed!
