Funerals are somber affairs, and as such, many people choose to wear black and men typically wear suits. The heat of summer can make dressing for an outdoor service more complicated, however. Fortunately, it is possible to dress appropriately for a summer funeral without causing yourself to overheat in the sun.

How to Dress for a Summer Funeral

1. Choose Lighter Fabrics

Although you want to avoid light or bright colors (unless it’s part of a religious custom), it’s perfectly acceptable to wear lighter-weight fabrics. Linen, silk blends, and other dressy, but light, fabrics will keep you cool while achieving a formal look.

2. Bare Your Shoulders

funeralUnless it’s against the deceased’s religious customs, there’s no harm in opting for a sleeveless blouse or dress. Just make sure they aren’t tight-fitting or low cut. Men can wear short-sleeve button-down shirts under their shirt jacket to keep cool.

3. Forego All Black

While wearing all black is a traditional custom, it’s not as expected today, so don’t feel obligated to do so, especially in the heat of summer. Instead, choose garments in other muted tones like navy or gray, which won’t absorb as much heat.

4. Accessorize

If all or part of the funeral service will be outdoors, it’s appropriate for both men and women to accessorize with a hat. Casual headwear like baseball caps and sun hats should be avoided for more formal options, such as a fedora.

5. Forget About Hosiery

While some customs still believe women should wear pantyhose with their dresses, in most cultures it’s acceptable for women to bare their legs, even at a funeral. Foregoing any hosiery will keep you cooler and more comfortable.
