Experiencing Tooth Pain? A Root Canal Might be The Best Course of Action, Monroe, New York

Tooth pain can be a very painful experience. Sometimes the cause can be just a minor cavity, but for severe pain, a root canal may be necessary to alleviate the problem. Hudson Valley Dental Care: Lawrence Gilbert, DDS in Monroe has the following advice on how to know if you might need a root canal and what the procedure is like.

A root canal is needed when the pulpy internal part of the tooth is damaged or decayed. This internal part of the tooth is also where the nerves are collected, so when this area is decaying, you will often feel some degree of pain. Tooth pain, regardless of its severity, is always a sign that you should visit your dentist for a complete checkup. Indicators that you may need a root canal include discoloration of the tooth and swelling of the gums.

If your dentist determines that you do need a root canal, do not worry; this is a common procedure. First, you may need to take an antibiotic for a few days to reduce any bacterial infection. Right before the procedure, the dentist will anesthetize the tooth area and begin drilling the tooth to clean out all the damaged and infected areas. Your dentist will thoroughly clean out the pulpy area of your tooth down through the root and then complete it with a filling.
