Cruising the waters on your speedboat is one of the pleasures that many Alaskans savor. To get out in the blue without a hitch, it’s important that you practice effective maintenance. With some guidance from Anchorage’s most respected marina, Dewey's Cook Inlet, you can quickly understand the best upkeep practices. Here’s a list from the experts on what you should be doing.

A Marina Crew’s Guide to Speedboat Maintenance

1. Conduct an Oil Change

marinaTo protect your motor, you’ll need to change the oil regularly to keep it properly lubricated. Over time, the oil collects grime and detritus, becoming a useless sludge. When that happens, the motor will generate problematic friction, creating overheating and putting the machine in jeopardy. Usually, the owner’s manual will instruct you on how often you should swap the oil. If you don’t have one available, consult a marina.

2. Examine the Propeller

After the motor, the propeller is one of the most important features of your craft, so it will need some periodic attention. At the beginning of the season, unscrew the propeller so you can give it a closer look. If you spot any dent or damage, it’s worth bringing to a repair technician or having it replaced. A marred propeller can make it impossible to steer and may endanger your boat. In the event you only spot minor scuffles, put some grease across the propeller to prevent corrosion.

3. Check the Batteries

For your boat to be fully operational, the batteries should be in good working order. First, test the different switches to see that everything is turning on. Next, look for signs of corrosion or rust in the battery terminals. If it’s present, use water and baking soda to scrub the area clean. It’s also worth examining wires to see if any are frayed or unusually taut. Those cables should be replaced before you head out on the water.
