Your classic car is a piece of history and deserves to be kept in top condition. Unfortunately, while you might enjoy the warmer weather of summer, your vehicle could suffer. Due to their age and older components, antique cars require extra attention to prepare for the heat. Here are a few ways to protect your engine from overheating, so you can enjoy driving it this summer—regardless of the outdoor temperature.

How to Keep Your Classic Car’s Engine Cool This Summer

1. Inspect Belts & Hoses

antique carsVisually inspect the belts, hoses, and water pump of the engine. There shouldn’t be any cracks. The hoses, in particular, should be free of swelling and damage that could lead to leaks. Get into the habit of checking the belts and hoses every time you get an oil change and replace them every five years, despite how often you drive it.

2. Check the Radiator

Clean off the radiator with a hose if dirt and bugs have accumulated. Make sure there aren’t any holes or damage. Leaks might appear as white or green substances on the radiator or its tubes. Replace the radiator cap washer if it hasn’t been done recently, which will ensure your cooling system is pressurized. Have your radiator flushed by a professional to prevent blocked cooling tubes and other issues that could keep your radiator from properly absorbing heat.

3. Replace the Thermostat

The thermostat of antique cars should open up to release coolant throughout the engine as it gets hotter and close when it’s cold. Your thermostat should be replaced to make sure it opens and closes correctly.

4. Replace the Freeze Plugs

You’ll find freeze plugs on one side or both sides of your engine. While they’re designed to keep the engine from freezing, they can also leak water from the cooling system, ultimately causing the vehicle to overheat. If the freeze plugs have become old and leaky, you’ll be able to see the water when you pop the hood.
