The refrigerator is one of the most-used appliances in your home. It runs consistently to keep all of the items inside cool, and as a result, you probably notice the unit feels warm to the touch from time to time. However, if it’s hot for longer periods of time, something else might be wrong. Before calling a refrigerator repair technician, here are a few reasons the appliance feels hot.

Why Your Refrigerator Feels Warmer Than Normal

1. Uses an Electric Heater

If you have an older refrigerator, it relies on an electric heater to stop condensation buildup inside the unit. Typically, this heater is designed to sit on the edge of the cabinet, so it’s normal for it to cause the appliance to feel warm. If this temperature gets too hot, try turning the heater off for a while.

2. Won’t Stop Running

However, if it’s still hot after a prolonged period or hasn’t stopped running, it might be a more severe issue, such as a broken thermostat or a malfunctioning defrost heater, and you’ll need to call a refrigerator repair technician.

3. Has a Defective Cold Control Switch

The compressor and fan circuits, which are necessary to keep the inside of the refrigerator cool, are turned on and off by the cold control switch. However, when these systems do not turn on often or long enough—but seem to be in good condition—the problem most likely lies with the switch. It might need to be replaced or recalibrated. To determine which is necessary, refrigerator repair contractors recommend unplugging the appliance and checking the switch’s capillary tube or sensing bulb for damage and the wire terminals for corrosion or loose connections.
