If you’re preparing to move with a pet to Hawaii, there are more steps involved than simply buying the plane tickets. All animals that enter Hawaii must meet the state requirements for the pet quarantine program. If you’re unsure as to what this entails, the caring veterinarians at Waipahu Waikele Pet Hospital in Waipahu, HI, discuss what to expect and how to streamline the process.

Vaccinations & Microchips

Your pet must be up-to-date on all vaccinations, including two rabies shots that will have to be given 30 days apart. Schedule the vaccinations at least three months in advance of the move or your pet will need to spend time in quarantine. You will also need the veterinarian to microchip your pet for identification and include the number on the health certificate.

Rabies Blood Test

veterinarianYou must wait at least three weeks after the second rabies shot before having a blood sample taken for the rabies test. It may take an additional month to receive the results. Your pet will have to wait 120 days after having their blood taken before they can enter the state of Hawaii without being placed into quarantine.

Submission of Documents

You will need to collect all the necessary documents to submit to the Animal Quarantine Station prior to your arrival. This includes the import form, vaccination certificates, inspection permit documentation, and the fees for the inspection in the form of a cashier’s check or money order.
