A handmade painting on canvas can add a touch of unique décor to any home. Many artists agree that there is nothing quite like painting on canvas; however, many primed and pre-stretched canvases are quite costly, so you will only want to use them for your best work. By making your own canvas, you can stretch your level of craftsmanship and save money in the long run. Honolulu’s premier arts and crafts store, Hawaiian Graphics, explains how it’s done.

Firstly, you will need to visit their quality art supplies store to purchase the right art materials, including a staple gun, staples, four wooden stretcher bars, (optional) stretcher bar keys 4-8, and canvas.

Join the stretchers together in a square shape and push the corners together by hand, they are made to fit together perfectly, (insert keys into inside corners). Check if the angles are correct (90deg) before rolling out the canvas and putting the assembled stretchers on top. Measure the canvas, giving an allowance of 4-6 inches (2"-3" each side) excess to fold over the outside edges of the stretchers, then cut canvas.

It's critical to remember that when attaching the canvas, you must work from the middle outwards and in opposites. Start in the center of any side and staple the canvas to the back of the stretcher. Use about three staples, two inches apart from each other. Move to the opposing side of the canvas, pull it taught, and staple the middle in place.  After that's done, staple one edge from the middle to the side, pulling the canvas tight as you go along. Keep working in a cross diagonal sequence to keep the tension even.  To keep wrinkles or bunched canvas from forming pull also from the side to smooth as you go.  Then switch to the sides using the same method until you reach the corners. Fold the edges of the canvas over neatly and staple the one to the top of the other.  Prime with gesso if necessary.  Have questions, why not stop by and talk to one of our art supply experts today?
