Life is full of bumps, bruises, and accidents. Whenever you have an injury, it is important to implement proper wound care to avoid infection and speed healing. There are many options when it comes to the dressing you use. You should make a choice based on the type of wound you have.

Different Types of Wound Care Dressings

What Is a Wound Care Dressing?

Dressings are different from bandages because they come into direct contact with your wound. They are used to help blood clot, prevent infection, keep dirt and debris out of the injury, and aid in the removal of dead tissue, which comes away as dressings are changed. They also absorb fluid and help the body’s healing process.

Types of Wound Care Dressings

  • Collagen dressings are used for chronic or slow healing wounds, such as bedsores or surgical sites. They may also be used on second-degree burns or wounds that cover a large surface area. This type of dressing creates a structure upon which new skin can grow.
  • Hydrocolloid dressings are used on wounds that present moderate drainage, placed under compression wraps, or applied to venous ulcers. They may also be used for burns. They contain a gel-like substance laminated to foam or film, and are best for non-infected wounds.
  • Hydrogel dressings are best for second degree burns or higher, painful or infected wounds, or those with little drainage. They cool, moisten, and provide pain relief.
  • Alginate dressings are used to pack wounds, absorb high amounts of drainage, and treat venous and pressure ulcers in advanced stages. They are derived from seaweed and help prevent bacterial infection.
